Expressions of la Comunidad
Art is a universal language. With or without the use of words the artist can create works that make others feel, believe, question, re-imagine, or relate. Breaking the barriers of communication, art opens multiple spaces for dialogue as different perspectives are shared and various interpretations welcomed.
Using art as a tool of communication, our Expressions of la Comunidad bilingual after-school program encourages the youth of Washington Heights to fuel their creativity into expressing their truths and realities. Inspired by the complexity of their cultures and identities, Expressions of la Comunidad stresses the significance of one’s roots, exploring Latino and urban inspired art within the youth’s neighborhoods.
In critiquing, analyzing, and interpreting art our youth develop their artistic voice and become involved in discussions concerning their local communities as well as the realities of others in their global community.
In partnership with the ADCP Beacon After-School Program, Expressions of la Comunidad aims to express through art, connect with artists in the community, bring awareness to social justice issues, and empower.
